The National Debt As A Moral Issue

Imagine a world were the debt we face is not a substantive issue, but a moral one. Well, that world may soon exist as evangelical groups are now debating the very issue.

The national debt is a unique issue when it comes to its effect on Americans. I consider it a kin to a war footing. How so? The threat it represents to our way of life is universal. It doesn’t matter if you are liberal or conservative. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor. It doesn’t matter if you are old or young. Given this, it is interesting to see how various voting groups are coming at the issue from different angles, but reaching the same conclusion – we must do something about the debt.

The evangelical view is somewhat murky at the moment as the debt leads to two biblical views being in conflict. On the one hand, the carry of debt leads to immorality according to broadcaster Daniel Burke. On the other hand, the bible clearly calls for Christians to help the poor. The question is how do you cut the national debt without hurting the poor significantly? The answer is there is really no clear answer at this point.

The more important point, however, is people are talking about the issue in these terms. Indeed, one can see this becoming the seed of a reunited Republican party. Fighting the debt is something evangelicals, fiscal conservatives and Tea Party members can all get behind. It will bear watching.
