Senator Rand Paul – Taking On The Third Rail of Politics
Rand Paul is a bit more caustic than his father and, thus, a bit more controversial. The one thing you can say
for him is he has the guts to take on the third rail of politics.
What does it mean to be a fiscal conservative in this country? If you blurt out be a Republican, you are wrong.
The mainstream Republican Party has given up on conservative financial policies. Frankly, it happened long ago with
Bush Jr. spending money like a drunk Democrat at a Nancy Pelosi party.
It is only the renegade Tea Partiers who seem to be sticking to financially conservative measures. Rand Paul is
the leader of this. He can seem fairly caustic, but his comments are some that everyone should listen to. Why? He
takes on the third rail of politics that no politician wants to talk about.
Entitlements are the first subject. Every Republican wants to reform Social Security and Medicare. It’s like
shooting fish in a barrel for any supposedly conservative Republican, so we can’t give Rand much credit for his
desire to reform these policies.
Military spending is another issue. Otherwise supposedly conservative Republicans refuse to cut military
spending. We need a strong country, right? Well, our military is so much bigger and advanced than any other in the
world it isn’t even funny. How about this for a fact? Our military budget has nearly doubled since 2001. It has
continued increasing during the Great Recession!
Rand Paul has stated time and again the military needs to be cut back. Where no other Republican has the nerve
to be a true fiscal conservative, Paul doesn’t hesitate to talk about this and reveal a naked truth. If we are
going to deal with the national debt in this country, it will require cuts to programs across the board be they
ones liberals live like entitlement programs or ones conservatives do such as the military.
I am not suggesting you should be a Tea Party supporter or even a Paul supporter. I am, however, suggesting it
is nice to see a politician stand up, be true to their ideology and apply it consistently across the entire
government budget. Paul is doing that.
