List of Foreign Owners of the US National Debt
MainSt has kicked out a list of the top 10 owners of US national debt and, in a quirky move, asserted what
states the debtors could hall off with. Here are the stats:
1. China – $891 billion
2. Japan – $883.6 billion
3. United Kingdom – $541.3 billion
4. Oil Exporters – $218.0
5. Brazil – $180.8
6. Caribbean Banking Centers – $155.6
7. Hong Kong – $138.2 billion
8. Canada – $134.6 billion
9. Taiwan – $131.9 billion
10. Russia – $106.2 billion
It is interesting to note that Japan owns nearly as much of our debt as China, but few people mention the
country as a threat to our economic well being. In truth, neither China nor Japan are a threat.
Consider China for a moment. If it were to dump our securities and crush our economy, it would be sticking a
knife in its own economy. Where would it sell its goods? Until China can answer that question, the economic threat
it poses is moderate. That being said, the country is definitely trying to come up with an answer.
